Windows Available

An official image with a compose example is on the way. The in-app update card will tell you when a new version exists.

Synology / QNAP / Unraid Planned

Native NAS packages are planned. The coming Docker image will cover all three.

The Windows installer needs no administrator rights and installs just for your user. Both the Windows and macOS installers are signed, so they install without a publisher warning. macOS will ask for your password once, because the server is installed for every account on the Mac.

What you need to run it

It depends less on your library's size than on how often the server has to re-encode anything. When your devices can play a file as it is, the server just reads it off the disk and sends it, which almost any machine can do for several people at once.

A mostly 1080p library

  • Any 4-core processor from the last decade
  • 4 GB of memory, 8 GB is comfortable
  • No graphics card needed for one or two streams
  • Room for your library, plus about 10 GB

A 4K or HDR library

  • A modern 6-core processor, 8-core is comfortable
  • 8 GB of memory, 16 GB is comfortable
  • A graphics card is strongly recommended, and one that encodes 10-bit HEVC is what keeps HDR through a re-encode
  • Room for your library, plus about 20 GB

On your network

Wire the server if you can. 1080p is comfortable over any decent Wi-Fi, but a 4K disc rip can run to 100 Mbps and really wants a cable or a strong Wi-Fi 6 signal. Gigabit Ethernet carries several 4K streams at once.

Watching away from home

The limit is your home internet's upload speed, not its download speed. Around 10 Mbps of upload carries one 1080p stream, and 25 Mbps carries two or three. The server lowers quality for remote viewers by default so it fits.

After you install

  1. Add your film and TV folders. Multipass scans and organises them.
  2. Open the web player in any browser to start watching immediately.
  3. The Apple TV, iPhone and Android apps are in beta while we finish store review.
